Empowering Young Venezuelan Girls in Quantum Education

Description:

Micro-project inside Global Quantum Education & Training Project

<Quantum|Chamitas> is a pilot micro-project focused on the development and exposition of topics related to quantum computing through engaging and didactic talks. The primary goal is to strengthen and facilitate the acquisition of scientific knowledge among a non-expert audience.

With a special emphasis on young Venezuelan girls aged 15-20, the project aims to empower and inspire them by providing comprehensive training in quantum computation. By equipping these talented individuals with the necessary knowledge to understand key concepts in quantum computing, my aim is to foster their passion for science and technology.

Through a structured and personalized mentorship approach, <Quantum|Chamitas> will nurture the growth of these young minds, enabling them to delve into the exciting world of quantum mechanics, computing, and emerging technologies. As they embark on this educational journey, their progress will be showcased and shared, serving as an inspiration for others.

The pilot micro-project of <Quantum|Chamitas> serves as a platform for the development of a strategy that will allow more girls to participate in the future. Through this initiative, I will also identify and address any difficulties encountered in the appropriation of knowledge related to the topic, ensuring an effective and inclusive learning experience.

General objectives:

To inform and engage the Venezuelan community, including the diaspora, about the concepts and applications of quantum computing.

To raise awareness and promote understanding of quantum computing among young girls outside the scientific community.

Attitudinal objectives:

To cultivate scientific dissemination skills among the girls and other participants, empowering them to effectively communicate and share their knowledge of quantum computing with non-specialists.

To inspire a sense of curiosity, wonder, and enthusiasm for quantum computing.

Dive into Quantum Computing at Las Mercedes de Aragua! Explore our transformative sessions with 3rd, 4th, and 5th-year students below:

Pilot talk.
In the pilot talk: 75% of them are currently in high school, while the remaining 25% are already college students.

Let’s find out the level of knowledge one of the girls had about the topic prior to the talk:

“Well, honestly, I don’t know much about quantum computing, practically nothing. I just know that it’s something more complex than traditional computing […] I’m excited and curious about it.”

Andrea Moreno, 19 years old.

Pre-Talk Insights: Girls’ Perceptions of Their Prior Knowledge”

Now, let’s see the highlights from one of the girls after the first talk!

Quantum Awakening: Highlights from our First Talk!

“I find quantum computing to be a fascinating topic, and I believe that giving these types of talks can help people become more aware of such computers or new technologies that can aid the future.”

María Arias, 17 years old.

I participated in the Qiskit Fall Fest Latino 2023, a key event for quantum computing enthusiasts in Spanish. During this event, I gave a 15 min lightalk highlighting <Quantum|Chamitas>. You can watch now on YouTube the presentation of the project! (By the moment, just in Spanish).
